This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the structure and function of the human body as it relates to the fields of esthetics and cosmetology. Areas of study include the structure, function, and reproduction of cells; the types and roles of tissues; the major organs and their functions; and an overview of the body systems and their interrelated functions.

This course provides students with foundational knowledge and skills in key areas of practice within the aesthetics industry. Topics include the hair growth cycle, professional set-up and preparation, client consultation, identification of contraindications, and the safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools, and implements. Students will also learn temporary hair removal methods and procedures for all areas of the body.

Students will gain foundational knowledge in career planning and management, with a focus on identifying career opportunities and navigating the salon and spa industry. The course will cover key areas such as business ownership and operations, life skills, human relations, professional development, communication, job search strategies, resume building, workplace competencies, sales techniques, and marketing principles.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of chemistry and its application in the field of cosmetology and aesthetics. Areas of study include the pH scale, the properties and structure of matter, and the role of chemistry in professional products, treatments, and services. Instruction will be delivered through both theory and clinical practice, emphasizing the relevance of chemistry to safe and effective cosmetology practices.

Students enrolled in this course will receive training in, and develop knowledge of, the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia Act and its Bylaws. Learners will gain an understanding of the licensing process and become familiar with the objectives and regulatory functions of the Association.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of electricity and its application in cosmetology. Areas of study include types of electrical current, electrical measurements, safety practices, and safety devices. Students will also develop an understanding of electrotherapy devices and their safe, effective use in professional practice.

Through a combination of classroom instruction and clinical practice, this course provides students with fundamental skills in facial treatments, relaxation massage, and spa body treatments. Learners will be introduced to professional procedures in client consultation and draping, as well as the safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools, and implements. The course also emphasizes techniques in skin analysis and the identification of contraindications. Additional areas of focus include types of facial services, basic facial procedures, facial massage techniques, spa body treatments, and the selection and application of appropriate products and treatments.

Students enrolled in this module will receive theory and practical skills training in the areas of infection control and universal precautions, including infection control principles and practices, and provincial guidelines for cleaning and sterilization, microbiology and bacteriology, viruses, parasites, infection and immunity.

The College will host industry-leading guest speakers who will offer valuable insights into current trends, techniques, tools, and products within the industry. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend field trips, seminars, and conduct research. Dedicated lab time will also be allocated at the end of the program for final exam preparation and completion.

This course provides students with comprehensive training in makeup artistry through both theoretical instruction and practical application. Students will develop foundational knowledge and skills in procedures and draping, client consultation, and the safe use and handling of supplies, equipment, tools, and implements. Areas of focus include facial anatomy and physiology, color theory, facial shapes and features, makeup products and techniques, and makeup application for various contexts. Instruction will cover day and evening looks, special event applications, makeup for men, teens, and aging skin, as well as the application of lash enhancements (strip lashes).

This module provides comprehensive training in both theory and practice, with a focus on clinical techniques in nail care and nail technology. Students will receive hands-on instruction in the application of manicures, pedicures, nail resin systems, and enhancements, while mastering best practices and adhering to industry standards.

Students will receive comprehensive practical and theoretical training in First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and Occupational Health & Safety.

The On-the-Job Training (OJT) program is an extension available to all students. Participation is determined solely by the recommendation of cosmetology instructors on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with: The Student Contract obligations Successful completion of the Course Outline to date The Private Career Colleges Act The Department of Labour and Advanced Education regulations The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia (CANS) Act, The Labour Standards Act Any other relevant factors specific to the student and the OJT program OJT placements may take place at any salon or spa in Nova Scotia that is registered and in good standing with the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia. The host salon/spa must: Agree to complete required training evaluation forms Employ Master Cosmetologists willing to supervise, support, and encourage the participant’s skill development The OJT program consists of 100 hours of training, to be completed over a maximum of four weeks. Students who do not secure an approved OJT placement will instead complete the required 100 hours of training at their enrolled Cosmetology School.

Students will receive instruction to develop foundations for maintaining a healthy mind & body in relation to Aesthetics. Topics covered will include basic nutrition, hygiene, ergonomics, physical presentation & professional image, stress management, rest and relaxation, and exercise.

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the histology and physiology of the skin. Areas of study include the functions of the skin, the anatomy and role of each skin layer, skin structure and growth, common skin disorders and diseases, nail disorders and diseases, as well as the anatomy of the hair follicle and the hair growth cycle.

This course will equip students with the knowledge and skills required to prepare for general aesthetics services. Key areas of focus will include the treatment room setup, supplies and equipment, the function of various implements, service preparation, client consultation, and the ability to recommend appropriate products and treatments.
