Have you ever had bloodwork done and then waited for the results? What most people don’t realize is that behind every result is a team of highly trained professionals quietly, but critically, working behind the scenes.

What is National Medical Laboratory Week?

National Medical Laboratory Week (Lab Week) was established in 1985 by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). The week is intended to raise awareness about the vital role that medical laboratory professionals, such as Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) and Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs), play within our healthcare system.

It is time to recognize a group of healthcare workers who are essential – but are often invisible to the public.

Lab Week shines a spotlight on their contributions and helps people better understand just how important they are to patient care.

Why Medical Laboratory Professionals Matter

Here’s something that might surprise you:

In fact, it is widely reported that laboratory testing plays a role in as many as 70% of healthcare decisions. Without accurate lab results, doctors simply wouldn’t have the information they need to make informed diagnoses or treatment plans.

Lab professionals truly are the “behind-the-scenes” backbone of healthcare – supporting everything from routine checkups to life-saving diagnoses.

What Do Medical Laboratory Assistants Do?

Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) are often the first point of contact for patients in a lab setting.

Their role includes:

  • Collecting blood and other samples from patients
  • Preparing and labeling specimens
  • Ensuring samples are properly handled and transported
  • Supporting technologists in processing and analyzing results

They play a key role in keeping the healthcare system running smoothly – and in making patients feel comfortable during what can sometimes be a stressful experience.

Why They’re Needed More Than Ever

Healthcare is growing, and so is the need for skilled lab professionals.

According to the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS), Canada faces a significant risk of shortage in this field from 2024 to 2033, as a large portion of the workforce approaches retirement and most job openings are expected to result from replacement needs.

That means more opportunities and a real need for new professionals entering the field.

Job Outlook in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is actively expanding training opportunities to address workforce needs, and employment prospects remain strong with relatively low unemployment in the field. For Medical Laboratory Assistants in particular, demand is high — meaning graduates are well-positioned to find work quickly after completing their training.

Whether in hospitals, clinics, or private labs, MLAs are needed to support fast, accurate testing, making this a stable and meaningful career path with strong job prospects.

A Career That Makes a Real Difference

If you’re considering a future in healthcare, becoming a Medical Laboratory Assistant offers a meaningful way to contribute – behind the scenes, but at the heart of patient care.

This career path could be a great fit if you are:

  • Interested in healthcare and want to play an essential behind-the-scenes role in patient diagnosis and treatment
  • Detail-oriented and enjoy science, biology, and working with precision in a laboratory environment
  • Looking for a stable, in-demand healthcare career with strong opportunities in hospitals, clinics, and labs
  • Considering a career change and want a practical, hands-on pathway into healthcare – without years in university
  • A new Canadian seeking recognized healthcare training and a pathway into the clinical laboratory workforce
