Career Fair Prep: How to Make a Great Impression

A career fair is a chance to meet employers, learn about opportunities and make connections that could help you take your next step.
A little preparation can help you walk in feeling confident and ready to make a great first impression. Here are some simple tips to help you prepare before the career fair, make the most of your time there, and follow up afterwards.
Before the Career Fair
1. Do your homework
Find out which employers will be attending and take a few minutes to learn about the ones that interest you most. Check out their websites, current job postings and the types of roles they hire for.
You don’t need to know everything. Just come prepared with a few employers you’d like to speak with.
2. Update your resume
Bring several copies of an up-to-date resume. Make sure it’s easy to read, free of errors and highlights the education, skills and experience that are relevant to the types of jobs you’re looking for. You can try the Government of Canada Job Bank Resume Builder if you need somewhere to start, or reach out to the Career Services team if you are a Willis College student or graduate.
Tip: Along with your resume, bring a notebook and a pen to take notes and contact information.
3. Plan what you’ll wear
Choose clean, neat, workplace-appropriate clothing that makes you feel confident.
Healthcare students: Scrubs or other workplace-appropriate attire related to your field are absolutely appropriate.
4. Prepare your introduction
Be ready to answer the question, “Tell me about yourself.”
Keep it simple. Introduce yourself, mention your program or area of study, and share what kind of work you’re interested in.
For example: “Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m studying Cybersecurity at Willis College, and I’m interested in starting my career in security operations. I’d love to learn more about opportunities with your organization.”
You don’t need to memorize a speech. Just have a starting point for the conversation.
At the Career Fair
1. Start the conversation
Approach employers with a smile, introduce yourself, and ask about their organization or available opportunities.
Be curious and let the conversation develop naturally.
2. Ask questions
A few questions to have ready:
- What types of positions do you typically hire for?
- What skills do you look for in new graduates?
- Do you offer opportunities for students or recent graduates?
- What advice would you give someone starting out in this field?
- What do you like most about working in this field?
- What’s the best way to apply?
3. Talk about what you can do
Think beyond your job history. Your program, hands-on training, projects, placements, volunteer experience and previous jobs have all helped you build skills.
Be ready to talk about skills such as:
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Problem-solving
- Customer service
- Technical skills
- Time management
Whenever possible, give a quick example of how you’ve used those skills.
4. Be professional
Make eye contact, listen, be engaged in the conversation, and thank employers for their time.
Remember: you’re not expected to know exactly what you want to do next. A career fair is also an opportunity to explore.
After the Career Fair
Follow up
If an employer gives you their contact information, asks you to apply, or suggests connecting on LinkedIn, follow up while the conversation is still fresh.
A short thank-you message can help reinforce the connection and show that you’re interested.
