Behind the Scenes of Cybersecurity: What Does a Security Operations Analyst Do?

A security warning pops up. Maybe it’s nothing, or maybe it’s a warning sign of something bigger.

As organizations rely more heavily on digital systems, networks and cloud technology, they need professionals who can help identify suspicious activity, investigate security incidents, analyze risk and protect their systems from cyber threats.

That’s where Security Operations Analysts come in. Now, Willis College is offering a new Security Operations Analyst program, designed to help students build practical IT and cybersecurity skills for a career in this growing field.

What does a Security Operations Analyst do?

Security Operations Analysts work behind the scenes to help keep an organization’s digital environment secure. They often work within a Security Operations Centre (SOC), monitoring systems and security data for signs of unusual or potentially malicious activity.

Their work can include monitoring security alerts, reviewing logs, analyzing network traffic, investigating suspicious behaviour and helping respond to security incidents.

It’s not simply about finding a problem. An analyst needs to understand what happened, why it happened and what should happen next.

For example, imagine a security system generates an alert after detecting an unusual login. Is it a legitimate employee working from somewhere new? Or could someone have gained unauthorized access to their account?

The analyst investigates the available information, looks for other warning signs and determines whether the activity requires action.

That combination of technology, investigation and problem-solving is what makes security operations such an interesting area of cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity starts with understanding technology

There’s a common misconception that you need to be an expert hacker or programmer to start a career in cybersecurity.

In reality, cybersecurity is a broad field, and security professionals need a strong understanding of the technology they are protecting.

That means learning how networks, operating systems, servers, cloud environments and security tools work together—and recognizing what normal activity looks like so that unusual activity stands out.

That’s why our Security Operations Analyst program starts with foundational IT and networking concepts before moving into more specialized cybersecurity training.

Students build their knowledge in areas such as computer hardware, networking, operating systems, Windows Server, Active Directory and helpdesk operations before progressing into network defence, Linux administration, cloud security, threat hunting and security operations.

Learn by doing

Cybersecurity is a field where practical experience matters.

Throughout the Security Operations Analyst program, students have opportunities to apply what they’re learning through security-focused labs and scenario-based training.

They develop skills in areas such as security monitoring, log analysis, network traffic analysis, incident investigation and threat detection.

The program also includes a capstone project that brings these skills together. Students work with a simulated organization and apply security operations techniques to investigate threats, analyze activity and practise defensive strategies.

The goal is to move beyond simply learning cybersecurity concepts and give students opportunities to practise using the tools and techniques they may encounter in the field.

Is security operations right for you?

You don’t have to consider yourself a “tech expert” to explore a career in cybersecurity.

Security operations can be a good fit for people who enjoy solving problems, figuring out how things work and paying attention to details. It’s also a field for people who are comfortable learning continuously—because technology and cyber threats are always changing.

And you don’t necessarily need previous cybersecurity experience to get started. The Willis College Security Operations Analyst program is designed to build knowledge from the ground up, making it an option for beginners interested in entering the field.

Where can security operations take you?

Security operations can provide a starting point for a career across the broader cybersecurity and IT fields.

Depending on their experience and qualifications, graduates may pursue roles such as Security Operations Centre (SOC) Analyst, Cybersecurity Analyst, Network Security Analyst, Infrastructure Security Analyst or Network Security Administrator.

As their experience grows, professionals can continue developing their skills and move into more specialized areas of cybersecurity.

Ready to explore a career in cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity needs people who are curious, analytical and ready to keep learning.

If you’re interested in technology and enjoy solving problems, a career in security operations could be worth exploring.
